Sri rangapatna is named after Vishnu the god of protection know as Sri rangapatna built in the 9th century by the Ganga dynasty . Now a small town but was very busy during the 18th century when Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan [who fought against the ruling British] This was the center of South Indian Political activities between 1761 to 1799. When Tippu was killed in 1799 by British the capital was shifted to Mysore by the British and Wodeyar dynasty restored.
